With sorrow, yet with firm confidence in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Archdiocese of Denver commends to the mercy of God Deacon Michael “Mike” Bunch, who passed away on March 19, 2026, at the age of 76, after a courageous battle with cancer. He died peacefully at his home in Lakewood, in the presence of his beloved wife.
Deacon Bunch was ordained to the diaconate on June 12, 2004, by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput. From that day forward, he lived his vocation as a servant of Christ with quiet strength, humility and unwavering fidelity.
He faithfully served at St. Jude Parish in Lakewood, with a brief assignment at Christ on the Mountain Parish in Lakewood, before returning to St. Jude, where he ministered devotedly until his retirement, including for a time as the controller, using his gifts as a Certified Public Accountant to benefit the church community. His ministry extended beyond the parish through compassionate service at Porter Hospital, his leadership as Liturgy Director and his contributions on the Deacon Council. In every setting, he was known as a steady and faithful servant, one who consistently showed up, cared deeply and brought others closer to Christ.
A proud patriot, Deacon Bunch served honorably in the United States Army from 1970 to 1971, including service in Vietnam. His willingness to serve his country in a time of war reflected the same sacrificial spirit that marked his diaconal life. He was recognized for this service this past Veterans Day.
Above all, he was a devoted husband and family man. He and his beloved wife, Laura, shared 55 years of marriage, a witness to enduring love and fidelity. He is survived by Laura, their children Jacquelynn and Williard, and their extended family, who now commend him to the Lord with gratitude and love.
“Deacon Mike lived his vocation as a servant of Christ and his Church with quiet strength, fidelity and love," said Deacon Ernie Martinez, archdiocesan director of deacons. "He was the kind of deacon you could always count on — steady, humble and deeply faithful. His life was a witness not in grand gestures, but in consistent, self-giving service. We give thanks to God for his life, his ministry and his enduring example to all of us.”
