Remembering Deacon John Franklin

With sorrow, yet with confidence in the mercy of Jesus Christ, the Archdiocese of Denver remembers Deacon John MacCarthy Franklin, who entered eternal life on July 16, 2026, at the age of 93, following a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. He died peacefully at his home in Frisco, Texas, in the presence of his beloved wife, Diane.

Deacon Franklin was ordained to the diaconate on June 10, 2000, by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput. He faithfully served the people of Holy Name Parish in Steamboat Springs until his retirement from active ministry in 2010.

In his discernment for the diaconate, Deacon Franklin once wrote, “I don’t think I bring a special skill to the Diaconate program, but I possess the energy, initiative and interest to be a good deacon. I believe I am called by God to serve others and want to learn more about my Church.”

Those humble words reveal much about the man and the vocation he would embrace. Deacon Franklin did not seek recognition or consider himself extraordinary. He simply desired to answer God’s call, grow in his Catholic faith and place his life at the service of others. Through his quiet strength, humility and unwavering fidelity, he became the “good deacon” he had hoped to be.

A proud patriot, Deacon Franklin served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1954 until 1982, including service during the Vietnam War. He retired with the rank of colonel after nearly three decades of military service. The discipline, courage and self-sacrifice with which he served his country were also reflected in the manner in which he served Christ and his Church.

Above all, Deacon Franklin was a devoted husband and father. He and Diane shared 67 years of marriage, offering a beautiful witness to enduring love, fidelity and perseverance. He is survived by Diane, their son, Michael and their extended family. Their daughter, Lisa Marie, preceded him in death.

“Deacon John’s own words at the beginning of his discernment reveal the heart of his vocation: a humble man who believed God was calling him to serve,” said Deacon Ernest Martinez, archdiocesan director of deacons. “Although I did not have the privilege of knowing him personally, his long and faithful service to his family, his country and the Church offers a powerful witness. We give thanks to God for his generous response to the call of Christ the Servant and for the enduring example he leaves to his brother deacons.”

A Funeral Mass was celebrated on August 8, 2026, at St. Martin de Porres Parish in Prosper, Texas. Interment at Ridgeview West Memorial Park will take place at a later date.

As we entrust Deacon Franklin to the mercy of God, we remain confident in the promise of Christ: “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live” (John 11:25).
