For the Catholic Church, education has always been understood as a sacred responsibility — one entrusted first and foremost to parents, who are called to form their children not only academically but morally and spiritually as well. Later this month, families across Colorado are invited to gather to celebrate that responsibility and the many ways it is lived out.

On Tuesday, January 27, from 1 to 2 p.m., students, parents and educators will gather on the West Steps of the Colorado Capitol for a family-friendly celebration in honor of National School Choice Week. The event highlights the diversity of educational options available to families, including public, private, charter and homeschool settings, and lifts up personal stories of how educational choice helps children flourish.

Catholic Social Teaching affirms that parents are the primary educators of their children and that society has a responsibility to support families in carrying out that duty. When families are able to choose schools that align with their conscience and values, education becomes a partnership ordered toward the dignity of the child and the good of the broader community.

Catholic schools in particular play a vital role in Colorado’s educational landscape, educating more than half of all private-school students statewide and contributing significantly to the common good by forming students in faith, service and academic excellence. Families who choose Catholic education partner with their school community to form future saints, making personal sacrifices to educate their children in environments rooted in Gospel values.

The celebration on January 27 will include testimonies from students, parents and educators, along with performances by school choirs, bands and student groups. Together, participants will reflect on how educational choice expands access, strengthens families and supports the long-term stability of schools committed to serving children holistically.

The event is open to everyone. No registration is required for individuals and families, who are encouraged simply to attend and participate. Schools, parishes, organizations and other groups of five or more are asked to register in advance to assist with planning.

For Catholics, this gathering is an opportunity to give thanks for the gift of education, to affirm the Church’s teaching on parental responsibility and to celebrate the many educators and schools who serve children with dedication and love. It is also a reminder that education is not merely preparation for a career, but formation for a life of faith, virtue and service.
