Denver Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila issued an open letter to the faithful of Northern Colorado announcing the new Mullen Residences at the Highlands, a new senior living community coming to North Denver in 2029. In his letter, the archbishop encourages the faithful to support the new effort and consider whether the community might be the right fit for an aging loved one. His letter is reprinted in full below:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am grateful to share important news about a renewed work of mercy in our archdiocese. For many years, the Mullen Home was a place where older adults were cared for with dignity and love. Founded by J.K. and Catherine Mullen and entrusted to the Little Sisters of the Poor, it stood as a constant reminder that Christ is present in the poor and the aged. Their legacy is not something we simply remember — it is something we are called to continue.

With that in mind, in partnership with Christian Living Communities (CLC), the Archdiocese of Denver is moving forward with Mullen Residences at the Highlands, a Catholic senior living community offering independent living, assisted living and memory care. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2027, with residents expected to move in by 2029.

This home will be where faith is lived openly in a beautiful eight-acre setting with breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains and the Denver skyline. At its center will be the historic chapel, where daily Mass and the sacraments will remain the foundation of community life. Prayer, fellowship and mutual support — not isolation — will define daily life.

Mullen Residences is being built for the people of our archdiocese — whether you live in the city, the suburbs, the plains or the mountains. It will also be a home for our retired clergy, whose presence will be a great blessing and a source of inspiration.

Our Lord reminds us, “I came that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). That promise does not expire with age. In this community, our elders will continue to live with purpose, surrounded by others, rooted in faith.

I am deeply grateful to our team at the Archdiocese, Christian Living Communities, Senior Housing Partners and all our collaborators for their dedication, vision and hard work in bringing this project to life. I ask for your prayers as we begin this work. I also encourage you to consider whether this may be the right place for you or someone you love in the years ahead. May our Lord bless this endeavor as we serve the needs of our older brothers and sisters.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Samuel J. Aquila
