Why a Stocked Diaper Bank Matters When Disaster Strikes

When wildfires increased the need among Southern Colorado families, Catholic Charities of Denver’s Bottom Line Diaper Bank was ready to double its usual support — showing how everyday generosity makes emergency response possible.

When families face an emergency, having strong community partnerships in place can enable quick responses to needs both big and small.
For Catholic Charities of Denver’s Marisol Family and Catholic Charities of Southern Colorado, an ongoing partnership is helping ensure families throughout Southern Colorado have access to one of the most basic necessities for their children: diapers.
Throughout the year, Catholic Charities of Southern Colorado receives diaper support from Catholic Charities of Denver’s Marisol Family’s Bottom Line Diaper Bank on a quarterly basis. The partnership helps extend the reach of Catholic Charities of Denver’s diaper bank beyond Marisol Family locations and into communities where families may otherwise have limited access to diaper assistance.
Sometimes, Marisol Family delivers the supplies directly through the Marisol Miles truck, while other times Catholic Charities of Southern Colorado picks them up. That flexibility allows both organizations to work together to get resources where they are needed most.
Recently, that partnership became even more important.
Responding When Families Needed More
As wildfires impacted families in Southern Colorado, Catholic Charities of Southern Colorado saw an increased need for assistance. As more families sought support, the organization reached out to Catholic Charities of Denver and requested additional diapers beyond its regular quarterly allocation.
Recognizing the increased need, Marisol Family doubled the organization’s usual diaper order for this distribution.
For parents caring for babies and young children while navigating the uncertainty and disruption caused by a wildfire, having access to enough diapers meant one less immediate concern.
The support extended beyond diapers. Marisol Family also provided stuffed animals and emergency preparedness buckets for families in Pueblo.
Through a partnership with ToolBank, the buckets included practical supplies such as hammers, gloves, safety glasses, cleaning supplies, utility knives and other essential tools to help families recover and prepare for future emergencies.
Each item met a different need. Diapers provided an everyday necessity for babies and parents. Stuffed animals offered comfort to children during a difficult time. Emergency supplies gave families practical resources as they worked toward recovery.
Reaching More Families Through Partnership
Catholic Charities of Southern Colorado does not operate a diaper program of its own, making its partnership with Catholic Charities of Denver especially meaningful.
It is also one example of how the Bottom Line Diaper Bank helps Catholic Charities of Denver serve families beyond its own locations.
Through generous donors, volunteers and community partners, the Bottom Line Diaper Bank collects and purchases diapers, which are distributed through Marisol Family locations, other Catholic Charities of Denver ministries and community partners.
Last year alone, Catholic Charities of Denver distributed more than 2.2 million diapers, helping serve more than 61,000 children and 35,000 adults.
Diapers are a basic necessity, but their cost can place additional pressure on families already balancing expenses such as food, housing, transportation and child care. Without an adequate supply, babies can face increased health risks and parents may encounter barriers to work, school or child care.
