What is love?
The question is more than a catchy chorus; it’s imperative to the Christian life.
In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that loving God is “the first and greatest commandment,” followed closely by loving our neighbors (Matthew 22:36-40).
Each year, faithful from around the archdiocese come together to witness to Christ’s love and their love for neighbor through their generous support of the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal.
“Love is more than a feeling; it is an action, a sacrifice, a response to God’s call,” Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila said. “The love we receive from Christ compels us to love others — especially those who are in need of his mercy. True love — Christ’s love — reaches beyond us. It feeds the hungry, shelters the homeless, forms future priests, educates our children, strengthens families and offers healing to the brokenhearted.”
The Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal supports more than 40 ministries all across Northern Colorado, including this very publication as well as Annunciation Heights, St. John Vianney and Redemptoris Mater seminaries, our archdiocesan Catholic schools and Catholic Charities, to name only a few.
Countless individuals throughout the archdiocese are positively impacted through gifts to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal. As the hands and feet of Jesus Christ, each of us help to provide food for the hungry, shelter for the needy, education and formation for Catholic students and seminarians, and outreach to individuals and families near and far from the Church.
“Through your prayer, service and financial support, you become a witness of Christ’s love in action. I ask you to consider how the Lord is calling you to love this year. Your generosity enables our local Church to offer evangelization workshops, youth conferences, campus ministry, healing retreats, and so much more — each a testament to what love is when lived out in faith. I ask all members of our parish communities to commit to this year’s appeal,” Archbishop Aquila concluded.
