CBS News Colorado Highlights Catholic Parents Seeking Equal Treatment from U.S. Supreme Court

With just one month before the State of Colorado, local Catholic parents and the Archdiocese of Denver head to the United States Supreme Court, CBS News Colorado highlighted some of the families behind the case.
Erika Nagle and Lisa and Dan Sheley, parents of students at St. Mary Catholic Virtue School in Littleton, recently sat down with CBS News Colorado to discuss St. Mary v. Roy, asking the United States Supreme Court to block Colorado's discrimination against Catholic families through their universal pre-school (UPK) program.
Begun in 2023, the program provides up to 15 hours per week of preschool education for Colorado children. Both families voted in favor of the program, only to find out that Catholic schools were excluded because of a "nondiscrimination" requirement that would force Catholic schools to act against their sincerely-held religious beliefs.
"When we found out that we weren't part of it, it was just such a tough pill to swallow, and it was just kind of shocking to see that the state was actively going out of their way to exclude Catholic families from this benefit," Nagle told CBS News Colorado.
On November 3, the Nagles and the Sheleys, along with attorneys from Becket and archdiocesan leadership, will appear before the United States Supreme Court.
