DENVER, Colo. — The Archdiocese of Denver today announced that Archbishop James R. Golka has appointed Deacon Doug Flinn as General Counsel for the Archdiocese.

In this role, Deacon Flinn will oversee key operational areas including real estate, human resources, and legal affairs. He will serve on the Archbishop’s Mission Leadership Team and work closely with the Vicar General and archdiocesan leadership to support the mission of the Church in Northern Colorado.

Deacon Flinn brings extensive experience in both ecclesial leadership and civil law. For the past four years, he has served the Diocese of Colorado Springs as Chancellor and General Counsel, following 14 years as General Counsel and Chief of Staff. In these roles, he has overseen legal affairs, supervised key operational functions, and advised diocesan leadership on a wide range of canonical, legal, and organizational matters, while supporting the governance and administrative operations of the diocese.

Prior to his diocesan service, Deacon Flinn served as a Judge Advocate General (JAG) in the United States Air Force and later as an Assistant Professor of Law at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He also practiced law at Sherman & Howard LLC, where he represented clients in complex litigation, government contracts, and regulatory matters.

Ordained a permanent deacon 15 years ago, Deacon Flinn has dedicated his ministry to service at the intersection of faith and professional life. He and his wife have been married for 36 years and are the parents of four children.

Deacon Flinn will continue to serve as a deacon at St. Peter Catholic Church in Monument.

“We are grateful to welcome Deacon Flinn to the Archdiocese of Denver,” Archbishop Golka said. “His experience, faith, and leadership will be a tremendous gift to our archdiocese.”

The Archdiocese of Denver welcomes Deacon Flinn and asks for prayers for him and his family as he begins this new role.
