Archbishop Aquila to lead pilgrimage to Mexico

Continuing with the theme of pilgrimage Pope Francis called for during this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila will lead a pilgrimage to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe and other holy sites in Mexico later this year.

The six-day pilgrimage will take place Oct. 27 – Nov. 1 and is being hosted by Centro San Juan Diego in conjunction with the Archdiocese of Denver.

“This pilgrimage will be a wonderful opportunity to encounter Christ and his mother more deeply during this Year of Mercy,” Archbishop Aquila said in a statement. “It is my hope that Our Lady of Guadalupe will guide me and all the faithful in the archdiocese in growing closer to her son and that he will increase our unity as a Church.”

Pilgrims will have the chance to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, where Archbishop Aquila will celebrate Mass in front of the Tilma of St. Juan Diego, the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary that appeared to St. Juan Diego in 1531.

Other sites the pilgrims will have the opportunity to visit include Tulpetlac, the pyramids of Teotihuacan, the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, Tlaxcala and Puebla. There will also be a day spent in Mexico City, where pilgrims will participate in Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral, the largest cathedral in all of Latin America.
