Who prays for the one who prays for you?

On Friday, June 27, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the faithful across the Archdiocese of Denver are invited to gather in prayer for our priests.

In observance of the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests, the Archdiocese will host a special evening of Eucharistic Adoration, bilingual Mass and fellowship at Sacred Heart Parish in Denver. The oldest continually operating Catholic church in Colorado, Sacred Heart is also the spiritual home of Servant of God Julia Greeley, a Black laywoman and Third Order Franciscan known for her hidden acts of charity and profound devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

This annual day of prayer, established by Pope St. John Paul II in 1995, falls each year on the feast of the Sacred Heart, a day that reminds us of the love of Christ poured out for us — and the hearts of his priests who are called to mirror that divine love in their ministry. In fact, the great patron saint of the diocesan priesthood, St. John Vianney, once remarked that “the priesthood is the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.”

The evening will begin with Eucharistic Adoration at 6:00 p.m., followed by a bilingual Mass in English and Spanish at 7:00 p.m., and a potluck dinner after Mass, open to all attendees.

The events, focused on spiritually supporting and uplifting the men who bring us the Eucharist, who baptize our children, who anoint our sick and who walk with us through every season of life, are at the core of the mission of the Church. When each of the faithful abides in relationship with the Trinity, drawing near to the Eucharist, the Church — and her priests — are made all the more holy.

And, as Denver Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila has often emphasized, the Church flourishes when her priests are happy, healthy and holy. In other words, the renewal of the Church depends in large part on the renewal of the priesthood. The faithful’s presence at this celebration is one small but powerful way to help bring that renewal to life.
