‘We really did our homework,’ says Archbishop Aquila of pastoral letter on drugs in new

Updated: Jan 7

Archbishop Samuel. J. Aquila’s recent Pastoral Letter on drug use has been making the rounds and causing a big splash in the Catholic world and beyond.

To learn more about his motivation for writing the letter, Jayd Henricks of What We Need Now interviewed Archbishop Aquila, which was published in full today.

“For this letter we really did our homework,” the archbishop told What We Need Now. “It is full of well-documented research data from a variety of sources. Since laws against marijuana have changed, one benefit — if I can call it that — has been wider opportunity to study the effects of it on the individual and on society. So we were able to draw from studies conducted recently that used better methodologies.”
