Saunders partners with Mount St. Vincent to help kids

Mount St. Vincent, a leading provider of treatment for children who suffer from the effects of abuse, neglect, or mental illness, was selected as Saunders Construction’s 2014 Building Confidence in Kids partner.

Through the partnership, Mount St. Vincent will receive a $25,000 grant, as well as volunteer time and in-kind donations from Saunders Construction and its employees over the next two years. The program is an employee-driven philanthropic initiative designed to complement their traditional giving programs.

Building Confidence in Kids allows Saunders’s employees to form ongoing partnerships with non-profit organizations centred on children, families or education. Mount St. Vincent was chosen in part because the agency encompasses all three areas: clinical treatment for abused and neglected children, therapy for families and kindergarten through eighth-grade education.

“We believe that providing a solid foundation for kids is the most important investment we can make in our community,” said Dan Humphreys, committee chair for Saunders. “The initial two-year timeframe will allow us to gain a solid understanding of how we can best help and develop a lasting relationship with Mount St. Vincent.”

Staff at the facility, founded by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth in 1883 as an orphanage, is grateful.

“We are deeply grateful to our friends at Saunders Construction for this generous gift,” said Kay Kelleher Mcdowell, director of development. “We are touched that Saunders is not only providing funding, they are also giving of their own time to work with our special population of children.”

The volunteers are planning to organize a carnival, fishing, hiking, bowling, rolling skating, equine therapy, and trips to Elitch Gardens, a Rockies’ baseball game and an Outlaws’ lacrosse game.
